![]() What helped me was following a strict GERD diet (No alcohol, coffee, soda, chocolate, peppermint, fatty foods, citrus fruits or acidic additives like citric or ascorbic acid). My theory is that the esophagus gets irritated and sensitive, and the nerves may get irritated as well, so we feel sensations in the esophagus that we shouldn't. This all began following a massive GERD flare and only comes on now after a flare. While I do have a hiatal hernia, I attribute it more to esophageal hypersensitivity and an irritated esophagus. I still get it from time to time, and sometimes it's only for a few seconds. I never actually gagged, but I would have an extremely strong sensation of gagging going up and down my esophagus that would last for hours at a time, and this went on for months. I have had issues with a gagging sensation myself on and off for a few years, but I went through a huge flare a few years ago. Hi! Do you actually gag, or do you just have a sensation of your gag reflex being triggered and a feeling that you could gag any second? We're not doctors here and we can only tell what we've experienced. ![]() I'd cut out any eating and drinking habits to see if that helps, and definitely ask the doctor what's going on. Were you told anything about backward movements in your esophagus? There are all sorts of things your throat could be doing when you work out, and you might have to stop the things that cause your problems - bending over, squats, heavy lifting. Fluids going back down is more likely your feeling. Your stomach isn't really in your neck, just slides up into your chest, alongside your heart. If the Lower Esophageal Sphincter isn't closing properly or is leaking, then fluids can get up into the esophagus, and that can cause your gagging. If a large portion of the stomach stays in the chest all the time it becomes important to get it fixed.Ī small hernia by itself is probably not causing your gagging. It's not necessarily something to worry about if it's a slider and not huge. Most people past a certain age get a small hiatal hernia and never know it. I guess the summary of what I'm asking is, has anyone else with a HH experienced that they gag during exertion when exercising and/or experienced a neck that is sensitive to the touch when the hernia is aggravated? My main problem seems to be from the structual sliding of the stomach and esophagus up into a cramped position. I don't get bad heartburn, although I do get it sometimes, and my reflux is nothing like some of the conditions I read about here, although I can get it if I get super careless with food and drinking alcohol on the weekends. The vagus nerve could also be a factor in this, as some sort of pressure on it could be causing the gag spasm.Īfter enough frustration with this, I went to a GI doc and demanded a barium swallow to see if I had a HH. I believe this is because the stomach bloats from eating and the pressure pushes it up through the diaphragm causing the compression in the neck once again. My neck is also very sensitive to the touch at this time, and any sudden movement or touching of the neck will trigger a very powerful gag. This is what got me to thinking it was a sliding hernia, because I could literally feel it slide down out of my neck.Īlso, after I eat certain foods, I feel bloated and the sensation is there very strongly. ![]() Doing sit ups once I had to stop because if I made another movement, I would gag, but after a few seconds of being still, I could feel the tension slide out of my neck and was able to knock out another 20 sit ups no problem. The sensation is very weird, and is a combination of a weird feeling right under the sternum that seemingly shoots up into the neck instantly causing a gag like spasm. ![]() What I believe is happening is that under exertion and pressure, the stomach pushes up through the hernia and causes the esophagus to cramp up in the neck area and trigger a gag reflex. It comes and goes in its severity, but it's always there and will always happen if I continue to push myself in a workout. ![]() I have a question regarding possible symptom of a HH, and am curious to see if anyone else has experienced it or anything similar.Ībout 2.5 years ago I developed a problem out of nowhere of gagging during certain exercise, specifically any sort of intense activity, and especially if it's something that involves exertion while winded (sprints, squats, wrestling etc). ![]()
